Four plant protein drinks failed to drink beverage protein is not desirable

September 22, 2021
Walnut dew, almond dew, soy milk... In many people's eyes, these vegetable protein drinks sold on the market are not “beverages” at all, but are good products for protein supplements. However, the results of the national supervision and spot checks on the quality of plant protein beverages announced by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China (AQSIQ) recently showed that there were four kinds of vegetable protein beverage products that were unqualified. These products were unqualified due to the fact that the protein content was lower than the national standard.

Zhu Yi, an associate professor at the College of Food Science and Nutritional Engineering at the China Agricultural University, emphasized that people who need special protein supplements are not advisable to drink protein from these plant protein drinks, because even if they meet the national standard, the protein drinks will not contain any protein. high.

Two drink protein content is not up to standard

According to the definition of the "Healthy Standard for Plant Protein Drinks," plant protein beverage products are processed from raw materials such as fruits, seeds or nuts, and nuts of nuts with high protein content. On the market, all kinds of soy milk, walnut, peanut, almond and coconut milk are all vegetable protein drinks.

On September 6, the reporter saw the results of its specific spot check on the official website of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine: 4 kinds of products such as Shunlu, Ruisheng, Qianqian, and Quanquan did not meet the requirements of the standard, involving protein and saccharin. Sodium, cyclamate and other items. Among them, Ruisheng Soymilk Beverage (180mL/cup) produced by Dechangfa Food Factory in Xichang Town, Jiedong County, Guangdong Province, and Sunshine Sunshine Soymilk (180mL/pack) produced by Guangxi Puxinfeng Food & Beverage Factory are all due to protein content. Not to be notified and notified, in which the measured protein content of Ruisheng soymilk drink is only 0.6g, and the measured value of protein of each Qianguang soymilk is only 0.7g.

The "Sanitary Standards for Plant Protein Drinks" stipulates that the protein content of vegetable protein drinks should meet the requirements of ≥ 0.5 g/100 ml, while the protein standard values of the above two kinds of packaging products should meet the requirements of ≥ 1.0 g.

Low protein content in beverages

"Want to drink vegetable protein drinks every day to supplement daily protein? This statement is very naive." Zhu Yi said that it is undeniable that vegetable protein beverages, compared to carbonated beverages and other beverages that are completely blended with additives, are indeed good choices for changing tastes and enriching lives.

However, the protein content of vegetable protein drinks is not enough to meet the needs of people who lack protein. She said that even if it is in line with national standards of vegetable protein drinks, there is only one hundred milliliters of beverage protein content ≥ 0.5g, which means that a can of three hundred milliliters of beverages, which may be less than 2g protein content.

According to the recommendations of the China Nutrition Society, adults should take 65-75g of protein daily. Therefore, if you want to supplement protein by drinking vegetable protein drinks, it is definitely a “paycheck.”

Moreover, Zhu Yi stressed that in order to reduce costs, some manufacturers may cut corners when selecting raw materials, and did not add enough ingredients such as walnuts and soybeans. Some of the products that failed to meet the standard for protein testing may also have a very low protein content for this reason.

Drink drinks with caution over heat

"A vegetable protein drink is a beverage even if it is relatively healthy." Zhu Yi stressed that it is inevitable that there are additives in drinks, so it is not recommended to drink large quantities.

Zhu Yi also stressed that sugar is added to beverages. Drinking too much can also cause excessive calories, and for diabetics and those who want to lose weight, vegetable protein beverages are not suitable.

The reporter noted that of the four unqualified vegetable protein beverages exposed by the AQSIQ, three of them were judged to be unqualified because of excessive levels of sodium saccharin or cyclamate. Among them, Hebei Chengde Xingzhiyuan Beverage Co., Ltd. produced Shunlu Walnut (240ml/can), in which the measured value of cyclamate was 0.74g/kg, and the standard value was ≤0.65g/kg. The Ruisheng soymilk drink (180mL/cup) produced by Deshengfa Food Factory, Xichang Town, Jiedong County, Guangdong Province, was found to have excessive sodium saccharine content. The actual measured value was 0.21g/kg, and the standard value was ≤0.15g/ Kg.

Zhu Yi said that with the mandatory implementation of the food nutrition labeling regulations, the plant protein drinks on the market may become more standardized later, and consumers can purchase them by reading the nutrient composition table. However, it is important to keep in mind that vegetable protein drinks are also beverages that cannot be over-contained nor can they replace normal diets.
